Dimensional Information

Linear and angular dimensional information is provided by Heads Up Display when placing architectural objects such as walls, doors, and windows.

When the Element Selection tool is active, Heads Up Display scans to locate other Building components such as walls, doors and windows. The type and number of scanned Building components is controlled by Heads Up Display settings in the Preferences dialog. When Building components are located, dimension strings and angles are displayed showing relationships with other Building components that exist in the DGN file and attached References. Alignment indicators also display to assist in locating start and end points for walls, beams, columns, and other Building components.

The type of view and view orientation determines the type of Heads Up Display information. For example, wall height displays in an elevation view, but not in a plan view.

Heads Up Display (HUD) Dimension Summary

This table lists the Heads Up Display dimensions that show when the Architectural objects listed are placed or modified. Wall objects seek other wall objects when modification occurs.

Architectural Object Heads Up Display Dimensions
During Placement During Modification
Walls Length and angle display.

Alignment indicators and dimensions display when pointer is aligned with the end point of an existing wall.

Alignment indicators display when the end point of a wall is placed and: (1) lines up with the end of an existing wall; (2) is over a column center line; and (3) lines up with a face or center of a wall.
Walls project dimensions perpendicular to and parallel with the selected wall.

When a parallel wall is unavailable, Heads Up Display scans for a parallel column center line.

Openings (in walls) Heads Up Display dimensions to the end points of receiving walls, and to the edge/center of openings in the receiving wall. Heads Up Display dimensions to the closest perpendicular wall, and to the edge/center of openings in the same wall.
Beams Alignment indicators display for columns and column center lines. Alignment indicators are not displayed for other beams. Beams project dimensions to column center lines.

When a parallel wall is unavailable, Heads Up Display scans for a parallel column center line.

Columns Dimensions to horizontal and vertical column center lines display, from the center of the column being placed, when no walls exist.

Dimensions to the closest horizontal and vertical walls display, from the center line of the column being placed, when walls exist.

Dimensions to the nearest horizontal and vertical walls display.

Dimensions for the distance between wall end point and nearest column center line display.

Components Dimensions to nearest horizontal and vertical walls display, from the top right corner of the component. Dimensions to nearest horizontal and vertical walls display, from the top right corner of the component.
Stairs Width of the stair and lateral dimensions of the stair flights; and landing dimensions for stairs with landings.

The dimensions of flights in the plan view aid in space calculation.

Heads Up Display remain intact for a stair, other than the dimensions modified in Stairs properties panel.
